The family history bug

About a month ago I asked a friend in Archives NZ to digitise my grandfather’s war service record. He served in the First World War on the Western Front. Family legend has it that he was invalided home after he was gassed in battle, but it’s a bit more prosaic than that. He had trench fever, something Wikipedia tells me is a moderately severe disease, spread by body lice.

Conditions in the trenches of World War I were, by all accounts, unpleasant to say the least. I doubt I could stand up to what he endured.

Anyway, I’m going to have a look at his regimental history and see what sort of battles he would have been involved in.

This week’s iTunes purchases

I’ve bought a few tracks this week. The first two are by steampunk pseudo-Victorian chap-hopper Professor Elemental. I’ve enjoyed A Cup of Brown Joy for several years, and Fighting Trousers since last year. I thought I had better put my money where my mouth is.

Cup of Brown Joy - Rebel Without Applause

Fighting Trousers - The Indifference Engine

The last two are from a couple of videogame soundtracks. The first was the soundtrack to trailer for the forthcoming survival horror game Dead Island. Not really my kind of game, but a beautiful piece of music. The second is Baba Yetu by Christopher Tin, from Civilization IV, the biggest time-suck of my gaming life. It actually won a Grammy earlier this year (even though the game was released years ago, the song only appeared on an album in the past year or so).

New beginning

I have had some experience with blogging in the past. It’s been an interesting creative outlet. At least for me. But I’ve never really garnered an audience for it. So I’m going to try with tumblr. It’s an interesting looking platform. Hopefully the content I post will carry some interest for any readers who might stumble on this.
